Director Software Engineering

The Opportunity

On-Running is expanding its Tech Center in the heart of Berlin and we’re looking for an experienced Director of Software Engineering. You will oversee agile and cross-functional teams of Salesforce and full-stack engineers, Product Owner, DevOps, and QA. With experience in building high-performance software, you will contribute to building robust and scalable technology for the worlds fastest growing and most innovative sports shoe and apparel brand, active in 45 countries worldwide.

In our technology hub in Kreuzberg, Berlin, we’re focused mainly on engineering and we continuously develop our platform using agile development practices. We have a multi-national and open company culture with over 35 different nationalities among our 350 employees, we operate in a booming market, have interesting projects, modern tech-stack, good parties and, last but not least, we are enthusiastic and motivated about our work and products.

You’ll work in close collaboration with our teams at our Zürich HQ (Switzerland) as well as teams in Portland (USA) and Yokohama (Japan).

The Team

You will be part of a cross-functional development team that implements features from design to deployment, being responsible and in charge of the full process and delivery. You have a lot of freedom to be creative and experimenting with new technologies. We encourage you to continuously improve efficiency, finding new ways of working with the team members, while at the same time enjoying work with like-minded people. Key responsibilities include:

• Lead talented teams of software developers in Berlin, Zürich and remote - lead, grow, hire and develop our talent
• Play a leading role in the architecture and design of our tech stack.
• Continuously raise the engineering bar with experience and passion for software excellence
• Ensure high availability, quality, performance, and efficiency of On systems: frontend, backend, fulfillment, supply chain, CRM, finance, PLM
• Be data-oriented and know how to design metrics to measure code quality, delivery and technical systems operational performance
• Establish best practices for cross-team collaboration and software development processes
• Become a strong player in the engineering leadership team
• Translate the company strategy into day to day operations
• Work with Product Management on risk, timeline, feature prioritization, capacity management, and roadmaps

• Have a minimum of 5 years experience in a senior leadership role, or being a senior software engineer in a professional agile environment
• Be hands-on and tech-savvy, aware of state of the art implementations, best practices, highly scalable low latency systems
• Track record in delivery and operations of complex scalable distributed platforms in the cloud
• Thoughtful and agile leadership style
• E-Commerce background as a bonus
• Proficiency in English
